The Rebel Alliance invites you into 95-year-old Inga’s living room in Denmark as she reaches out through space and time to her grandson in New Zealand.

Inga has seen world wars, cold wars, civil wars, both in real life and on TV. And when you’re close to 100 you know a thing or two about a thing or two.

Back to Square One? was originally designed to be performed in driveways, parks and cul-de-sacs in the aftermath of the 2020 lockdown. Using only chalk to draw with, writer and performer Anders Falstie-Jensen recounts the Norse myth of Ragnarok through a unique story of disasters, family and unexpected connections.

Winner of “Best of Fest” at the 2022 Nelson Fringe Festival and shortlisted for the 2020 Adam Award for Best New NZ Play, Back to Square One? is based on Anders’s conversations with his 95-year-old grandmother in Denmark during the first lockdown and interviews he conducted with his neighbours about their experiences after finding themselves living in a global pandemic.

Back to Square One? premiered in Anders’ driveway in 2020 and has gone on to tour Aotearoa New Zealand extensively. Six different actors have performed this work in various settings. Sometimes indoors, sometimes outdoors. Sometimes for 10 people, sometimes for a hundred. Numbers do not matter for The Rebel Alliance. The opportunity to gather friends and strangers does.

The Rebel Alliance

The Rebel Alliance is an independent Auckland-based theatre company that, since its founding in 2006, has presented 11 works, seven of which were premieres of New Zealand plays. We also initiated the development of Centrepoint, which co-won the 2015 Adam Award for best New Zealand play.

Often solidly planted in real life (The Orderly, Grace, Heroic Faun No. One, Yours Truly, Standstill, Manifesto 2083, Back to Square One? and The Valentina), the works we present prove that truth often surpasses fiction. Extraordinary life stories move, provoke, inspire and put our own lives into perspective.

In 2024 we premiered our 11th play, The Valentina, as part of the Auckland Arts Festival.
