Dance Rhyme, Calligraphy, Martial Arts

The Inking of Imagery. Man and Words as One.

The title of After Snowfall comes from a famous letter by Wang Xizhi, the Sage of Calligraphy, to a friend. Written more than 1,600 years ago, this lyrical 28-word piece created with a simple brush and ink conveys a far-reaching meaning. Hong Kong Dance Company is pleased to present this new multimedia dance programme, inspired by the Sage’s words, that transcends time and space.

The highest artistic standard of Chinese traditional art and culture is to attain a harmony between heaven and earth, blend the two forces, and transcend past and present. Hong Kong Dance Company has based its latest creation on Chinese culture and has selected one of the shortest pieces from the Sage of Calligraphy as the inspiration. Dancers who have been trained in martial arts for seven years will lift the brush and ink sticks and use the art of dance to trace the calligraphy. This new production weaves a “character” of strength and grace, combining the fluidity of dance and the power of martial arts with skill and artistry.

A quick snowfall remembered and a thousand years of ink enjoyed, a new creation in the art of dance. How wonderful!
