Hong Kong Dance Company delves into the confluence of Chinese dance and martial arts through research study on both traditions that began in 2018 and continues to the present. The workshop centres on the integration of Chinese dance and martial arts, providing hands-on experience for participants to explore both traditions. From there, participants learn to find a new body language, discover the landscape beyond, opening a dialogue between dance and martial arts through the experience, putting aside inherent knowledge.
Yang Yuntao
Artistic Director, Hong Kong Dance Company
Winner of two Hong Kong Dance Awards (2003, 2006) for his outstanding dance performance, and awarded Best Artist (Dance) at the Hong Kong Arts Development Awards 2009, Yang Yuntao is an accomplished dancer and choreographer. He joined the Hong Kong Dance Company (HKDance) in 2002 as Principal Dancer. He was the company's Assistant Artistic Director from 2007 and has been its Artistic Director since 2013.
Yang has choreographed for various dance companies. His award-winning choreography for HKDance includes: Spring Ritual·Eulogy (Outstanding Achievement in Production at the 15th Hong Kong Dance Awards in 2013 and presented in Beijing and Taipei); The Legend of Mulan (Outstanding Production and Outstanding Ensemble Performance at the 16th Hong Kong Dance Awards in 2014 and presented in New York, Sydney, London and Minsk in 2015, 2017 and 2019 respectively); Storm Clouds (winner of three awards, including Outstanding Achievement in Production at the 17th Hong Kong Dance Awards in 2015); L’Amour Immortel (winner of three awards at the 18th Hong Kong Dance Awards in 2016, presented in Beijing and Guangzhou in 2017, in Taipei in 2018 and in Shanghai and Hangzhou in 2019); Waiting Heart (Outstanding Medium Venue Production at the 21st Hong Kong Dance Award in 2021); and Convergence (Outstanding Online Production at the 23rd Hong Kong Dance Awards in 2022). Excerpts from Convergence and Whispers of the Pines also won the 13th China Dance Lotus Awards (Contemporary Dance) in 2023, the most prestigious national award for dancing in China.
- The workshop will be conducted in Putonghua, supplemented with simple English translation.
- Holders of the HKPAX Full Pass are eligible to attend. Space is limited, available on a first-come, first-served basis. Online pre-registration is required.
- Please come in sportswear and sneakers. Avoid wearing overly tight- or loose-fitting clothes as well as accessorised outfits.
